The Vincentian International Network for Justice, Peace, and Integrity of Creation (VIN-JPIC) has called for global solidarity to address stigma, promote rehabilitation, and support the reintegration of former prisoners.
Speaking at an international conference held in Abuja on Prisoners’ Justice Day, Mr. Jim Claffey, the International Coordinator of VIN-JPIC’s NGO UN-Desk in New York, emphasized the need for reforms that humanize correctional centers. The event, organized by VIN-JPIC in collaboration with Earthspring International, focused on the theme “Restorative Justice and Community Reintegration.”
Claffey underscored the importance of justice as a foundation for dignity and a cohesive society.
He recalled the death of Eddie Nalon in 1974 at Canada’s Millhaven Maximum Security Prison, an incident that inspired the annual observance of Prisoners’ Justice Day on August 10.
“Justice is intrinsic to humanity.
Without it, society devolves into a jungle of power where the weak and voiceless are oppressed,” Claffey stated.
VIN-JPIC’s ongoing advocacy aims to reduce the dehumanization of those in prison and ease the path for ex-offenders reentering society. Claffey called for policies that address stigmatization and empower returning citizens.
Senator Shehu Sani, represented by Mr. Daniel Amos, praised the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) for its rehabilitation efforts, highlighting facilities like Kuje Custodial Center, which offers degree programs to inmates. “NCoS is fulfilling its mandate, empowering inmates to achieve their educational goals,” Sani said.
Participants at the conference urged Nigeria’s Ministry of Interior to prioritize prisoner welfare and implement restorative justice practices. Some advocated for severe penalties for crimes involving organ harvesting and murder. Panel discussions, award presentations, and other activities underscored the day’s theme of reform and reintegration.
According to the World Prison Brief (WPB), Nigeria currently holds 74,059 inmates, ranking as the 27th country with the highest prison population globally.
The WPB is an institution collating data on prisons worldwide.
