No fewer than 39 people died and 191 injured in 122 road crashes around Shagamu Local Governnent Area of Ogun State in 10 months in 2022.
The Unit Commander, Sagamu Unit Command of Federal Road Safety Corps, Taofiq Iyanda, disclosed this during the 2022 Ember months campaign flag-off at Isale-Oko Motor Park, Sagamu, Ogun State on Tuesday at the campaign, tagged: “Avoid Speeding, Overloading and Unsafe Tyre to Arrive Alive”.
Iyanda said that 46 people died while 289 were injured on 122 road crashes on the roads in 2021,niting that the 2022 figure showed a decrease in both the number of deaths and injuries.
The unit commander said that 459 people were rescued so far in accidents on the roads in 2022, compared to 392 rescued in 2021.
Iyanda added that 689 people were involved in road accidents on the roads in 2022 while 727 people were involved in road accidents there in 2021.
He identified causes of the accidents to include speeding, driving under fatigue, driving against traffic, overloading and the use of unsafe tyres.
“All hands must be on deck in ensuring that traffic rules and regulations are obeyed to minimise road crashes that lead to loss of lives and injuries and, of course, destruction of both private and public property.
“There is the need for robust public education with aggressive enforcement of traffic rules and regulations to stem crashes during the ember months,’’ he said.
Iyanda warned tanker drivers against indiscriminate parking and driving under fatigue, saying that 10 persons were burnt to death as a result of this on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Oct. 20.
Earlier, Mr Ahmed Umar, FRSC Sector Commander, Ogun, cautioned motorists against using secondhand tyres, overloading and night travels.
Umar, represented by Mr Adeniyi Gbadebo, the Head of Technical Service Department, FRSC, Ogun, implored motorists to be patient and disciplined to reduce accidents.
“We are appealing to them to adhere strictly to the stipulated speed limit and take adequate rest when on long journeys to reduce mishaps,” he said.
The Chairman of Sagama Local Government, Mr Jubril Odulate, urged motorists to desist from driving against traffic, saying that many lives had been lost to it.
