The official Saudi Press Agency (SPA) says Eid al-Fitr will begin on Monday, May 2,as a result of Saudi not sighting the Shawwal moon on Saturday.
It qouted Saudi Arabia’s Supreme Court as saying that countries which marked the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan on April 2 would thus conclude the 30th day of Ramadan on May 1.
The Agency further reports that the UAE, Qatar, Iraq, Kuwait, Bahrain, Palestine, Syria, Yemen, Lebanon, Egypt, Sudan and Turkey also announced that the first day of Eid al-Fitr would be May 2, according to the International Astronomical Center Twitter.
Eid al-Fitr celebrations follow the end of Ramadan which lasts 29 or 30 days based on when the crescent moon is sighted.
Muslims follow a lunar calendar which consists of 12 months in a year of 354 or 355 days.
The moon was not sighted as at 7.42 p.m on Saturday when l this report was published.
