Food security: Al-Hikmah University to turn vast lands to mechanised farmlands–VC

Prof. Noah Yusuf, the Vice Chancellor, Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin, Kwara State,says the institution will turn vast hectares of land in the institution to a highly mechanised farming region to address food security challenges in the state.

Yusuf ,who disclosed this while briefing newsmen on Tuesday in Ilorin,to herald activities of the 11th Convocation ceremony of the institution, said this was to make food available in the state and Nigeria at large .

”The University farm has been harvesting various crops, sold at subsidised prices to the immediate University and communities in Igbaja and Ilorin.

“Our plan is to turn the vast hectares of land in Igbaja into a highly mechanized farming region.

“This will boost the food security within the axis and to the country at large,” the vice chancellor said.

For the convocation ceremony, Prof.
Yusuf said the university woukd convocate 1,079 students; 28 with first class, 282 with second class upper , 532 with second class lower and 97 with third class and others with pass.

The Vice -chancellor, said the university had completed plan to commence gradual movement of the campus from Adeta campus to Atere main campus following the congestion. due to the high level of interest and increase in number of admission,

He called on philanthropists to assist the institution to provide quality education for Nigerians, adding that number of admitted students for 2021 was 1,287.

“In the academic sphere, the University has established a Centre for Peace and Security Studies, as part of its determination to practically demonstrate the town and gown culture.

“We all know that threat to peace is the greatest challenge facing the country now more than ever before.

“As part of our effort at improving the academic culture of the University, the Inaugural Lecture Committee was constituted and current arrangements are underway to deliver the University’s Maiden Inaugural Lecture anytime from now”, the VC said.
