Breaking:Niger Information Commissioner kidnapped

Barely forty-eight hours after the abduction of an APC Chieftain, Niger state government has confirmed the kidnap of the Commissioner for Information, Alhaji Mohammed Sani Idris.

The Secretary to the Government of Niger state, Alhaji Ahmed Ibrahim Matane, made the confirmation in Minna.

Our Correspondent reports that details on how the commissioner entered the kidnappers’ remained sketchy as at the time of this report on Monday morning, but he is said to have been kidnaped by suspected armed bandits at about 1:a m on Monday from his home at Baban-tunga village in Tafa Local Government Area of the state.

Sani Idris, who is said to have visited his area for the weekend before the suspected armed bandits came calling, was last seen at the commissioning of some metropolitan roads rehabilitated and reconstructed by the Governor Sani Bello-led administration.

“Security agencies are already trailing the bandits with a view to apprehending them”, Mary Noel-Berje, the Chief Press Secretary
to the Governor of Niger state said.

Our Correspondent gathered that efforts were on to rescue the Commissioner.

In another development,Sp Okasanmi Ajayi, the Police Public Relations Officer,Kwara State Police Command, has also acknowledged the receipt of two kidnap incidents on Saturday along Okeonigbin/Omuaran highway and Ekiti / Ekan Meje axis of the state.

He said that six armed men emerged from the bush and stopped a Siena bus in transit from Ekiti state on its way to Ilorin and the seven occupants of the vehicle were marched into the bush.

According to him, theCommand promptly dispatched its tactical units comprising the Anti kidnapping and Anti cultists units, joined by local hunters and vigilantes members while police patrols on the routes were alerted.

“The abductors were instantly chased into the bushes, four out of the seven abducted persons were rescued, efforts are still in top gear to get the remaining three rescued.

“Deploying similar tactics by operatives, those abducted in Ekanmeje /Ekiti axis using the same modus were equally rescued,remaining a pastor and his wife who the Command is frantically doing everything possible to rescue unhurt.

“Some suspects have been arrested and are helping the command in her investigation.

“Situation is under control, the good people of Kwara State are advised to go about their lawful businesses without any fear of molestation and atttack. Patrols of all the routes in the state has been intensified.

“Any suspected activties within our immediate environments should be reported to the police without delay,”he said.
