The Third Mainland Bridge has been be closed to enable completion of repair works on its double sized expansion, Lagos State Government has said.
The Commissioner for Transportation, Dr Frederic Oladehide,who stated this in a statement in Lagos on Thursday said the facility would be totally closed to all traffic from Saturday till midnight Monday.
The closure, he added, became necessary to enable completion of the repair without any interruption that could be caused by vehicular movement on the bridge.
The commissione said the bridge repaired work was done assiduously to ensure that the set deadlines for reopening the entire bridge was met.
He, however, assured that alternative routes had been identified for use by motorists to access their desired destinations with minimal discomfort.
He, therefore, urged motorists from Ogudu, Alapere and Gbagada to use Ikorodu Road, Jibowu and Yaba as alternative routes.
Those from Iyana Oworosoki bound traffic from the Lagos Island, Iddo, Oyingbo, Adekunle and Yaba, he added, should use Herbert Macaulay Way, Jibowu and Ikorodu road as alternative routes.
“The Traffic Management Personnel will as expected be deployed and stationed along the affected routes to minimise and address any traffic impediments during the closure,” Oladeinde said.
The Commissioner, however, appealed to members of public to cooperate with the state government to ensure improved mobility and free flow of traffic on the roads.
The Reporters recalls that the bridge, which measures about 11.8 km in length, was built by Julius Berger Nigeria PLC and opened by President Ibrahim Babangida in 1990.
