JJ Rawlings’death and political future of his wife,Nana Konadu Rawlings

Not longtime ago,specifically last week,the world, indeed Africa and much more, Ghana was hit by the sad news of the death of one of the fearless, sagacious, honest and pragmatic leaders Africa has ever produced, JJ Rawlings.

As the world mourns the passage of this great leader of our time, there has been growing thinking in some quarters in Ghana as to the impact of this collosal loss on the political aspiration of his wife, Nana Rawlings, who is warming to contest the forthcoming presential election in Ghana soon.

A Political analyst,Ben Ephson, believes that the death of former President Jerry John Rawlings will have an impact on the political career of his wife, Nana Konadu Agyemang-Rawlings.

With just a few weeks to the December 7 general elections, he predicted that the former First Lady, who is also the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Party, might not contest. Again, he was quick to add that: “Mrs Rawlinga will take the 11th position on the ballot sheet and is confident of winning the polls.

However, before the demise her husband, the former First Lady had started a nationwide campaign and had promised to give both the ruling New Patriotic Party and the opposition National Democratic Congress a run for their monies.

As Ephson maintains that”it is unclear whether Nana will still contest or pull out of the race to mourn her beloved husband,political observers argue that his view during an interview on Adom TV, “leaves Mrs Rawlings at a crossroad.”

“She [Nana Konadu] might decide not to contest out of respect or contest the elections to prove a point,” he added.
