I listened to a conversation between two young girls the other day and it sparked some thoughts in me. A lady passed by and one of the girls exclaimed:
“Eh! see Ngozi.”
“You are calling her Ngozi!. Is she your mate? Can’t you say, mama Chichi!” Retorted the other. Shortly after then, another lady passed. She is much older than the previous one and the second girl called out loud:
“Franca! we will be coming to your house later.” The girl that was admonished said:
“Ehen!, you are also calling your senior by her name.”
“This one is not married now!”
I did not think much of this conversation until recently when a lady was called by her maiden name and she was angry.
“I am not your mate. Call me Mrs. Olaitan.” yet another lady was addressed as mummy and she was angry because though old, she was still single.
I was going to conclude that unmarried ladies would like to be addressed as young, but then, I recalled a colleague that once got upset because a younger person spoke to her rudely and she said:
“I don’t blame you, because I’m not married you think I’m your mate right?”
Although my examples above are on ladies, it happens with men too So then, what is in age that we talk about?
Careful studies reveal to me, it is nothing but the product of society’s reasoning and what people believe in themselves. So be free to determine your age. Young or old, is what you think, how you feel.
