As Nigerians appreciate their ministers for donating 50 per cent of their March salaries toward COVID-19 efforts in the country, the Vice President of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumua, has donated three months of his salary to Ghana’s effort to contain the pandemic disease in Ghana.
Duaglobalnews reports that Bawumu’s gesture is a follow up to that of their President, Akufo-Addo, a move Ghanaians described as exemplary.
The online medium recalls that in his broadcast to the nation on Friday night, President Akufo-Addo, instructed the Controller and Accountant General to pay his next three months salary to support the Fund.
He also announced the establishment of a COVID-19 Fund to raise money to mitigate the impact of the virus on vulnerable Ghanaians who have been affected, among other measures.
The 57-year-old Vice President has also confirmed that his next three months’ salary would be paid to the COVID-19 Fund to support the efforts of the country in that regard.
“I am donating three months of my salary, starting from April, to support the fight against COVID-19,” Bawumia wrote on his Facebook page on Saturday.
He said his gesture was to support that of the President who directed the Controller and Accountant General pay his April, May and June salaries to Covid-19 Fund.
The vice president, who expressed sympathy with the victims of the virus, urged all Ghanaians to adhere strictly to measures announced by the government to prevent further spread of the disease.
Bawumua said:“Fellow Ghanaians, March has been a sorrowful month for us as a nation with the Covid-19 infection.
“Samira and I empathise with all infected with the virus, and we wish them a speedy recovery.
“We also express our sympathies to families of those who have lost their lives through the virus. May the souls of the departed rest in the bossom of God.
“President Akufo-Addo’s address to the nation anchored on the bold measures taken by the government to help contain the Coronavirus pandemic and prevent further spread.”
The vice presidentesident expressed optimism that if government’s preventive protocols were observed, the country would overcome the virus.
“Ultimately, we should all endeavour to stay at home, observe the preventive measures and together create a Covid-19-free society,” he further urged the people.
