The Kano State Executive Council on Monday, “unanimously approved the dethronement of the Emir of Kano, Mallam Muhammadu Sanusi II at a special sitting held today by the council.”
The Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Abba Anwar, explained in a statement in Kano on Monday that, the emir was removed due “…total disrespect to lawful instructions from the State Governor and other lawful authorities.”
He said the Emir was also removed because of his persistent refusal to attend official meetings and programmes organised by the government without any lawful justification which amounts to total insubordination.”
He quoted Secretary to the State Government (SSG) as saying at the state council meeting that “It is on record and in so many instances, Malam Muhammadu Sanusi II has been found breaching Part Section 13 (a-e) of the Kano State Emirate Law 2019.
He said “if left unchecked, it will destroy the good and established image of the Kano Emirate.”
The SSG was further quoted to have said that the “removal was done to safeguard the sanctity, culture, tradition, and prestige of the Kano Emirate built over the years.”
He also said the removal was done after due consultation with relevant stakeholders, adding that a new emir would be announced in due course and urged people to remain calm and go about their normal businesses.
Sanusi II was born July 31,1961 and was the 14th Emir of Kano from the Fulani Sullubawa clan.
Sanusi Ii, a product of King’s college,Lagos and Ahmadu Bello University,Zaria among other institutions he attended, ascended the throne in 2014, following the death of his granduncle, Ado Bayero and deposed by Governor Abdullahi Ganduje 9 March 9,2020.
An economist, the dethroned emir was one time Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
