The First Lady of Nigeria, Oluremi Tinubu, has urged the leadership of the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA) to prioritise the welfare and empowerment of police families, as part of broader efforts to strengthen social support systems within the force.
She gave the advice while receiving Mrs Mutiat Disu, wife of the Inspector General of Police, at the State House in Abuja, in a meeting that underscored collaboration between government-led social initiatives and institutional support groups.
Speaking during the engagement, the First Lady further urged Mrs Disu to sustain and expand efforts aimed at improving the well-being of wives of police officers across the country, noting their critical role in maintaining family stability within the force.
Earlier,Mrs Disu, who also serves as the National President of POWA, said the visit was aimed at drawing from the First Lady’s experience and exploring opportunities within the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) to benefit members of the association.
She added that the purpose of visiting was to tap from the First lady’s wealth of experience and to understand programmes available for the masses, particularly how POWA can benefit.
She disclosed that the interaction exposed her to various intervention programmes under the RHI, especially in the areas of healthcare, social support and women’s empowerment, which she intends to extend to police families nationwide.
“I have learnt so much within this short period, and I am confident that as we begin to work together, our members will benefit more from these programmes. We will be looking at RHI’s social interventions and healthcare initiatives for police families,” Mrs Disu added.
She further assured that her leadership would align closely with the First Lady’s vision, particularly as it concerns women-focused programmes, noting that POWA is largely made up of women.
“What Nigerians should expect from me is readiness to work with the First Lady on initiatives that impact our women, especially as RHI is designed to uplift women and families,” she said.
Mrs Disu assumed leadership of POWA following the appointment of her husband, Tunji Disu, as Inspector General of Police on February 24, 2026, succeeding Kayode Egbetokun.
