When Love Dances Across Tribes: How a Wedding Ceremony Resonates Kogi’s Unity

It was not the kind of wedding(mother’s Day) that announced itself with intimidating opulence or extravagant display. Yet, on that memorable evening at 500 unit area of Lokoja, capital of Kogi State,on Saturday ,December 20,2025,a moderately organized ceremony quietly achieved what years of political rhetoric have struggled to sustain in Kogi State: genuine unity, expressed through laughter, music, dance and shared humanity.

Within a wedding ceremony, this concept celebrates the seamless transition of love,where a mother’s guidance and blessings pave the way for the union and future of a new family.
This is the dream of every mother or guidance and Malama Khadijat Bako did not hesitate in extending such gesture to Kafayat, to kick start her marriage ceremony.

The occasion was a pre-wedding celebration organised by a respected Igala family from Kogi East, led by a senior immigration officer, Mal.Bako Aliyu, who chose to honour his daughter,Kafayat ,on the eve of her formal betrothal.

What began as a simple family gathering soon transformed into a vibrant musical and cultural convergence, drawing guests from across the state’s ethnic divide,Igala, Egbira and Okun,bound together not by politics, but by joy.

From the moment the first drumbeat pierced the air, it was clear that this would not be an ordinary ceremony. Igala music took centre stage and its pulsating rhythms rolled effortlessly across the venue. Soon enough, the dance floor surrendered to what guests jokingly described as “hot dance”,energetic, spontaneous, and irresistibly communal. Age, title and ethnic identity dissolved in the shared language of movement.

The bride-to-be, glowing with anticipation, was the heart of the celebration. She danced freely, flanked by friends and relatives who responded instinctively to both local and national tunes. Igala folk songs melted into Egbira beats; contemporary Nigerian music juxtaposed,following without resistance. Each transition felt symbolic,different sounds, one rhythm; different tribes, one people.

Perhaps the most striking image of the moderately colourful occasion was the sight of Egbira extractions from Kogi Central,most of who took to the dancing floor while Igala and Okun women insulated in approval. No one asked where anyone came from. The only relevant question was: Can you dance? And if you could not, laughter welcomed you anyway.

In a state often described as ethnically polarised geo-political expression,where politics sometimes deepens fault lines, the wedding offered a refreshing counter-narrative. It reminded everyone present that Kogi’s diversity is not a burden but a strength,one that flourishes naturally when given a human, cultural platform rather than a political one.

Entertainment, as the event demonstrated, is more than leisure. It is a tool of social engineering. Through music and dance, cutting across ethnic diversity,suspicion gave way to familiarity, and familiarity bred trust. Conversations flowed easily across ethnic lines, contacts were exchanged, friendships rekindled and new ones formed at the occasion.In that shared space, unity was not preached; it was practiced.

Beyond the dance floor, the implications were profound. The basic lesson here is that development thrives where unity What more,economic collaboration, social harmony and political stability are easier to achieve when people see themselves first as neighbours and compatriots before ethnic representatives. Again at the occasion, Kogi looked less like three senatorial districts and more like one indivisible community.

Officer Bako Aliyu,who appreciated the audience for attending the occasion,may have set out simply to honour his daughter, but in doing so, he inadvertently hosted a masterclass in grassroots nation-building. Without speeches or slogans, the ceremony communicated a powerful message: that unity begins in homes, grows at social gatherings, and matures into collective progress.

As the music finally softened and guests prepared to depart, one truth lingered in the cool night air. If weddings, festivals and cultural exchanges can unite Kogi’s people this effortlessly, then the pathway to the state’s next banner of development may well begin not in the Lugard Houses, but on dance floors,where love, culture and unity move in perfect rhythm.
