A Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Dr. Reuben Atabo, has urged the Federal Government to prosecute all sponsors of killings across the country, regardless of their status or influence.
Atabo also called for the strengthening of existing laws to enable the prosecution of former political office holders for abuse of power and wrongful decisions taken while in office.
The senior lawyer made the call in Abuja during an event marking his 36 years at the Nigerian Bar. He stressed that stronger legal frameworks would help curb impunity and check the abuse of power by public officials.
According to him, political office holders must be held accountable, while transparency should be upheld at all levels of governance.
In an address titled âReflections on Legal Practice,â Atabo attributed his professional successes to Godâs mercy and grace.
âI give God the glory for His grace, wisdom and strength over the past 36 years. Indeed, I can describe this period as one of amazing grace in my life,â he said.
He highlighted some landmark cases handled by his law firm over the years, including Abdu Bello Ho & Anor vs. I & S Int. Ltd (2001); Sulgrave Holdings Inc. & 19 Ors vs. Federal Government of Nigeria & 3 Ors (2012); and Sampson Ebenehi & Anor vs. The State (2009).
Atabo also recounted the challenges he faced while taking on the Kaduna State Government over land disputes, including the acquisition of 814 hectares of farmland without compensation to the original landowners.
Reflecting on his journey, he described his 36 years at the Bar as a period marked by trials and tribulations, but ultimately sustained by faith and perseverance.
In her opening remarks, the Deputy Head of Chamber, R.O. Atabo, SAN & Co., Mrs. Abaro-Gloria Haruna, praised Ataboâs humility, industriousness and principled advocacy, noting that these qualities had earned him widespread respect within the legal profession.
Keynote speaker at the event, Dr. Joseph Akubo, SAN, described Atabo as âa man with a golden heart,â adding that he is humble, generous, amiable and hardworking, with a consistent willingness to help those in need.
Also speaking, Mrs. Elizabeth Max-Uba, former Secretary of the Council of Legal Education, recalled her long-standing relationship with Atabo, which began during their days at the University of Jos in 1984. She described him as a classmate and fellow of the 1989 Bar, known for doing things the right way without undue influence.
The wife of the senior lawyer, Mrs. Martha Atabo, expressed pride in her husbandâs growth, saying she had watched him evolve âfrom a young barrister into a Senior Advocate of Nigeria.â
âI am celebrating my husbandâs character, resilience and excellence,â she said, describing him as âa champion for the defenceless,â and wishing him continued success, long life and good health.
The event also featured the recognition of long-serving staff of the law firm. Josephine Umana, John Edwin and Danjuma Yakubu who received cash awards in appreciation of their years of dedicated service.
