The Governor of Niger State, Hon. Mohammed Umaru Bago, has approved a six-month maternity leave for female civil servants in the state, with immediate effect.
This was disclosed by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Hajiya Binta Mamman, during a press briefing on Tuesday in Minna ,following the State Executive Council (SEC) meeting held at the Council Chamber of the Government House.
According to Mamman, the policy is designed to allow nursing mothers ample time to care for their newborns and recover from childbirth, which in turn is expected to enhance their productivity upon returning to work.
She noted that the Head of Service, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq Idris, has been directed to develop the necessary modalities to ensure effective implementation of the policy.
“This six-month maternity leave is already being implemented at the federal level. Niger State is merely domesticating the policy.
“The governor’s approval reflects a commitment to improving maternal and child health in line with global best practices,”Mamman explained.
In a related development, Governor Bago has approved the redeployment of former Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Jonathan Tsado Vatsa, to the media department of the administration.
Until his new posting, Vatsa served as the Special Adviser on Industry, Trade and Investments.
He will now function as the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, joining the information and communications team tasked with the responsibility of projecting the achievements of the current administration.
“With Vatsa’s inclusion in the media team, any accomplishments of the Bago-led administration that have yet to be publicized will now receive appropriate media coverage,” Mamman added.
