At least 13 people lost their lives in a devastating auto crash on Saturday morning along the Owo-Ikare highway in Ondo State. The incident occurred at Abule Panu, near Ose Bridge, around 10:14 am.

According to reports, the accident involved two buses, which collided head-on, resulting in both vehicles bursting into flames. Tragically, the victims were burnt beyond recognition.

An eyewitness revealed that a tyre burst on one of the buses, which was traveling from the Ikare axis, caused the driver to lose control and collided with another bus carrying fabrics from the opposite direction.

The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ibitoye Samuel, Ondo State Command confirmed that 14 people were involved in the crash.

According to him, thirteen died at the scene, while one person was rescued alive with severe injuries.

“After the collision, the buses caught fire immediately. Emergency responders, including FRSC officials, the Police, and the Fire Service, arrived promptly,” Samuel stated.

The injured survivor was taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Owo, while the remains of the deceased were deposited in the hospital morgue.

Commander Samuel urged drivers to prioritize vehicle maintenance and drive with caution, while encouraging passengers to speak up against reckless driving.

“Road safety is everyone’s responsibility,” he emphasized.

Investigation into the tragic accident is ongoing.
