The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intensified its crackdown on drug trafficking in Kogi State, arresting 284 suspects and seizing a staggering 5,232,575 kilograms of illicit substances between January and December 2024.
The agency also confiscated counterfeit currency valued at $2 million and ₦20.4 million in various denominations. NDLEA Commander for Kogi, Mr. Mustapha Yahuza, disclosed these developments during a news conference held in Lokoja on Monday.
In addition to the arrests and seizures, Yahuza revealed that 10 hectares of marijuana plantations were destroyed as part of the agency’s enforcement efforts.
“This is a huge and remarkable achievement in our fight against drug abuse and trafficking in Kogi State,” Yahuza stated, attributing the success to the professionalism and dedication of NDLEA personnel despite significant challenges.
The confiscated drugs included Cannabis Sativa, Tramadol, Diazepam, Methamphetamine, Cocaine, Heroin, and other illicit substances. Yahuza also highlighted the conviction of 91 individuals, with additional cases pending trial at the Federal High Court in Lokoja.
As part of its preventive measures, the NDLEA sensitised 51 schools and organisations on the dangers of drug abuse and counselled 195 individuals through its drug demand reduction initiative.
Yahuza issued a stern warning against drug trafficking and consumption, citing their devastating impact on communities and the nation. The seized items have been handed over to appropriate authorities for further investigation and prosecution.
