By Dada Ahmed, Lokoja.

In a world where quick success often seems to come from flashy careers or high-tech industries, Mr. Friday Ife Samuel, a well-known shoemaker in Lokoja, Kogi State, is challenging young Nigerians to rethink the value of traditional craftsmanship. Known widely as “Shoe Doctor,” Samuel is the owner of Jegede Shoemaking Company, located in the popular Cantonment in Lokoja and has made a name for himself as a successful entrepreneur in the once-dismissed trade of shoemaking.
At his workshop in Lokoja, Samuel, who also repairs hand bags, shared his journey with The Reporters and urged young people to recognize shoemaking not as a last resort but as a viable, dignified profession that can lead to financial independence and success.
He emphasized that shoemaking, when approached with skill and dedication, is not only a source of pride but also a “money-spinning venture” for those willing to learn and work hard.
“My father passed down this business to me, and I have no regrets,” Samuel said, reflecting on his decision to carry on the family legacy.
“Through this trade, I have found both purpose and prosperity.
“I have participated in trade fairs, made N5 million in a single event, and trained many young people who are now excelling in the industry—both here in Lokoja and beyond.”
While Samuel acknowledges that many people still look down on shoemakers, he passionately argued that the craft requires much more than basic skills.
“Shoemaking involves creativity, precision, and science. It’s a profession that demands attention to detail—from design to measurement, and the production of each shoe,” he explains.
Samuel’s message to young Nigerians, particularly those who feel lost or uncertain about their future, is clear: “If you don’t have a skill yet, consider shoemaking. It’s not just about making shoes—it’s about creating something of value, something that people need every day. With determination and a willingness to learn, this could be the foundation for a successful career.”
Samuel’s story serves as a powerful reminder that every profession, no matter how humble it may seem, has the potential to change lives.
He has proven that with dedication and pride in one’s work, even an often-overlooked trade can be a gateway to financial success, personal fulfillment, and the opportunity to inspire others.
As he continues to grow his business and mentor young people, Samuel hopes that more Nigerians will stop treating shoemakers with disdain and start recognizing the immense potential in the craft.
Through his example, he is proving that shoemaking is not just a trade, but a pathway to respect, dignity, and financial stability in an ever-changing world.
For the youth of Nigeria, Samuel’s story is a lesson in the importance of finding purpose and value in work, no matter the field. “If you’re willing to put in the effort and learn, you’ll find that this business can change your life,” he says.
