No doubt, in the contemporary political landscape of Nigeria, the Central Senatorial District of Kogi State has emerged as a dynamic hub, largely due to the efforts and influence of the Ebira people.
History records the political evolution of this vibrant community in North Central Nigeria. From the early days in Kwara State, where they produced the state’s first civilian governor, Alhaji Adamu Atta, the Ebira people have consistently played a significant role in the region’s political journey. Today, the Central District holds a unique position in Kogi State’s political equation, with two Ebira sons, Alhaji Yahaya Bello and the recently elected Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, rising to the governorship.
As the district looks to the future, political analysts suggest that strengthening of the district’s political relevance could be a strategic approach for long-term progress and stability within the state.
The purpose of this piece, therefore, is to offer a comprehensive view of the political journey of the Ebira people, examine the historical milestones they have achieved, and explore how the Central District can build on its current momentum in Kogi’s political landscape. Focusing on the Ebira community aims to provide a balanced perspective, while recognizing the contributions of all ethnic groups that make Kogi a richly diverse state.
Reflecting on history, the Ebira people, indigenous to the present-day Kogi State, were once part of Kwara State, where they began their political journey and established themselves as an influential community. Political historians note that the ascent of Alhaji Adamu Atta to the governorship of Kwara State in 1979 marked a significant milestone. Atta’s election as the first civilian governor in Kwara State remains a historic achievement, symbolizing the resilience and ambition of the Ebira people.
Empirical evidence suggests that his leadership laid the groundwork for a political legacy that would eventually extend to Kogi State. Atta’s tenure further revealed the organizational strength and cultural pride of the Ebira people, as he sought to promote unity and development among diverse ethnic groups within Kwara. This approach established Atta as a leader who contributed to an evolving political awareness within the Ebira community, helping them refine their strategies for political engagement in the years to come.
With the creation of Kogi State in 1991, the Ebira people found a new arena for political engagement. As part of a broader multicultural community that includes other ethnic groups such as the Igala and Okun, the Ebira saw this transition as both an opportunity and a challenge to navigate the complexities of a diverse political landscape in this new geopolitical entity called Kogi.
As the new state matured, the Central District gained recognition for its strategic importance in both political and economic matters. The district’s rich cultural heritage, economic resources, and proactive leadership all contributed to its influence within Kogi. However, it wasn’t until 2016 that the Ebira people solidified their standing by achieving the governorship within the state.
The political ascent of Ebira leadership in Kogi, marked by Yahaya Bello’s tenure as the first Ebira indigene to emerge as governor of Kogi State, ushered in a new era for the Central District. Bello’s election, following the unexpected passing of gubernatorial candidate,Prince Abubakar Audu, gave the Central District a new level of political visibility. His administration brought renewed focus to the district, implementing policies focused on security, infrastructure, and youth empowerment across Kogi State.
One of Bello’s significant achievements was in the area of security. Recognizing Kogi’s vulnerability to regional conflicts and criminal activities, he prioritized security infrastructure and enforcement, creating a more stable environment for citizens and businesses. This focus on safety not only benefited the state but also demonstrated the leadership potential of the Central District.
Bello also emphasized economic development and infrastructure, initiating projects aimed at enhancing healthcare and education among others. His tenure, undeniably, raised the profile of the Central District in Kogi’s political arena, establishing a foundation for future leaders from the area.
Following in Bello’s footsteps, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo emerged as another significant figure in Kogi’s political landscape. Elected in 2023 and sworn-in 2024, Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo’s victory marked the second time an Ebira leader ascended to the governorship in Kogi, reflecting growing respect for the Central District’s contributions to state governance.
Ododo’s background in public administration and finance positions him as a leader well-equipped to navigate the challenges of managing a complex state like Kogi. His administration is building on the progress made by his predecessor, focusing on economic diversification, social welfare programmes, timely payment of workers’ salaries, and enhanced community engagement. Successes thus far in Ododo’s administration could further strengthen the Central District’s influence within Kogi, underscoring the leadership capabilities of the Ebira community.
To enhance political relevance, political scientists stress that the political leaders of the district must work diligently towards inclusive governance to boost development.To start with ,the leaders in the district can strengthen its position by championing policies that benefit all ethnic groups within Kogi, as being consolidated by the Ododo administration.
Political analysts suggest that such policies could include initiatives promoting economic empowerment, healthcare, and education, particularly in marginalized communities. By championing policies that support all Kogi residents, the Central District can enhance its reputation as a leader committed to statewide unity and prosperity.
Moreso,it is important for the people of the Central District to foster alliances across ethnic lines. In a multicultural state like Kogi, cross-ethnic alliances are essential for long-term political relevance. Ebira leaders in the Central District have an opportunity to build coalitions with leaders from other districts, such as the Igala in the East and the Okun in the West. These alliances could support policies that benefit the entire state, ensuring that the Central District’s influence extends beyond its immediate constituency.
Encouraging youth participation in Kogi’s political process is also crucial for long-term sustainability. The Central District could lead the way by investing in youth development programmes, offering mentorship opportunities, and actively encouraging young people to participate in politics.
The belief of those in this school of thought argue that such an approach would not only strengthen the district’s leadership pipeline but also secure the loyalty and support of the next generation.
The current administration in Kogi would benefit from fostering a culture of transparency and accountability, as political success is often tied to public trust. By upholding transparency and accountability, the Central District can build a strong reputation as a region that prioritizes the well-being of all Kogi citizens. This commitment to ethical governance would help sustain the district’s influence and foster goodwill among residents from all backgrounds.
Expanding economic opportunities is another priority for Central District leaders to be considered.To enhance its relevance further, the district could focus on economic development initiatives that capitalize on Kogi’s natural resources and geographic advantages. Promoting local industries—such as agriculture, mining, and tourism—could create jobs and stimulate economic growth across the state. An economically prosperous Central District would contribute to a stronger Kogi and underscore the district’s commitment to statewide progress , according to agriculture experts.
In all, it must be noted that the political journey of the Ebira people from Kwara to Kogi State is a testament to resilience, strategic engagement, and a commitment to leadership. By producing prominent leaders like Alhaji Adamu Atta, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, and Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, the Ebira have positioned the Central District as a key force in Kogi’s political landscape.
Looking forward therefore,it is fair to argue that the Central District has an opportunity to build on its successes through continued promotion of inclusive development, strengthening alliances, and fostering transparency in governance. In doing so, the district can enhance its relevance in Kogi State, ensuring that its contributions are recognized and valued by all Kogi residents.
By prioritizing unity, peace and progress, the Central District can continue to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of Kogi State, making it a prosperous home for all its diverse communities.
