The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) advised its state councils to brace for significant challenges to ensure full compliance with the new wage.
The NLC advice comes as public sector workers await the framework for the N70,000 national minimum wage implementation from the federal government,
The NLC President,Joe Ajaero, gave the advice during a workshop for NLC state councils from the South, with the support of the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES) and the International Labour Organisation (ILO).
Ajaero.emphasized that securing the new minimum wage is just the first step, adding that its complete and effective implementation is crucial for the welfare of all workers.
He said, “The wage of a single worker often sustains many more—feeding families, educating children, and supporting communities. It is not merely a paycheck; it is the lifeblood of society.
” When we fight for better wages, we are not asking for charity; we are fulfilling a sacred duty—to build a vibrant economy, uplift the nation, and secure the dignity of work. This is a divine responsibility, one that we are bound by conscience and duty to carry out.
“On October 3rd, we began this workshop in Kano with the Northern zone, and now we gather here for the Southern zone. As we meet, remember that every worker is watching us. They rely on our courage, resolve, and unity to voice their concerns at the negotiation tables ahead.”
Reflecting on the struggle for the new National Minimum Wage Act, Ajaero noted the challenges faced, including threats, propaganda, and attempts to undermine their efforts.
He added ,“We faced vilification and intimidation, but we did not waver. We stood strong and sacrificed not just for ourselves but for every worker in this country.”
