Recent reports from Greenbarge Reporters online newspaper reveal a significant drop in tomato prices, with a basket now costing between N55,000 and N60,000, down from around N150,000 a few months ago, especially in Lagos and Abuja.
A market survey in Lagos’ Ketu and Berger markets confirms that a large basket of tomatoes now ranges between N55,000 and N60,000, while a crate that previously cost N55,000 is now selling for N30,000. Similarly, the price of habanero pepper has decreased from N55,000 to an average of N25,000.
Traders attribute this price drop to seasonal availability of Hausa tomatoes and peppers. In Ketu market, a small basket of tomatoes now costs between N20,000 and N25,000, down from N30,000 to N34,000. A small sack of pepper is now priced at N15,000 to N20,000, compared to its previous cost of N50,000.
At Berger market, a large basket of tomatoes has fallen from between N150,000 and N200,000 to about N50,000-N60,000, and a crate has decreased from N35,000 to N15,000.
The largest sack of habanero pepper now sells for N19,500, down from N200,000-N230,000. A medium sack has dropped from N130,000 to N17,500.
Additionally, a big bowl of cayenne pepper is now priced between N8,000 and N9,000, significantly lower than its former price of N28,000.
Traders in Abuja’s Dutse market report that a basket of tomatoes now costs N8,000, down from N13,000-N15,000. Red bell pepper (tatashe) is now available for N7,500, previously priced at N12,000, and habanero pepper has decreased to N9,000 from N13,000-N15,000. Cayenne pepper is now priced at N8,000, compared to the earlier N12,000.
Traders attribute the price drop to the seasonal availability of these items and reduced transportation costs due to stable petrol prices. However, prices can fluctuate unpredictably based on supply and demand.
