Arc. Abayomi Awoniyi, former Deputy Governor of Kogi State, has resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Awoniyi, who dumped the main opposition, “after 25 unbroken years of loyal and dedicated membership and service,”communicated his decision in a letter dated August 31, 2023, addressed to the Chairman of PDP,. Mopa-Muro Local Government chapter.
He wrote:“I hereby write to tender my letter of resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party, after 25 unbroken years of loyal and dedicated membership and service.
“With this resignation, I cease to be a member of the PDP.
“Kindly convey my sincere gratitude to the party faithful in Mopa-Muro LGA, Kogi West Senatorial District, and indeed the entire state, through your fellow LGA Party chairmen, for their support and camaraderie, over the years.
“I look forward to our continued friendship, despite no longer being members of the same political party.”
The Reporters recalls that Yomi’s father, late Chief Sunday Awoniyi , was a founding member of the PDP.
Awoniyi, who served as Deputy to former Governor Idris Wada, is yet to reveal his next line of action.
Our correspondent recalls that Awoniyi leaving PDP might not be unconnected with his dissatisfaction with the conduct and outcome of the last governorship primary election of the party that produced Sen.Dino Melaye as PDP candidate for the November 11,Governorship election in the state.
Though the letter of the ex-deputy governor was made known to journalists in Lokoja, recently, many believe that Arc.Awoniyi left PDP some months back.
Meanwhile, the exit of Awoniyi has thrown many political observers in the state into guessing as to the next political party he is likely to join with some politicians pointing at the the All Progressives Congress,(APC),the ruling party.
