The Federal Government has formally lifted the suspension it imposed on Twitter about six months ago.
Kashifu Abdullahi, Director-General,National Information Technology Development Agency ( NITDA),made the disclosure in a statement he made on Wednesday in Abuja.
The Director-General said:”Federal Government of Nigeria ( FGN) directs me to inform the public that, President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, has approved the lifting of the suspension off Twitter operations in Nigeria, effective from 12a.m tonight, 13th January,2022.
” The approval was given, following a memo written to the President by the Honourable Minister of Communication and Digital Economy,Prof. Isa Ali Ibrahim.
” In the Memo,the Minister updated and requested the President’s approval for the lifting based on the Technical Committee Nigeria Twitter Engagement’s recommendations.”
He also said that Twitter had agreed to comply with tax obligations under the Nigerian law and agreed to enroll Nigeria in its Partner Support and Law Enforcement Portals.
Our Correspondent recalls that the federal government suspended Twitter operations in June 2021 after the social media platform deleted what it termed controversial,a tweet by President Buhari.
Consequently,the suspension generated at lot of reactions from members of the public in the country.
Some users of Twitter in Lokoja, Kogi State capital, expressed delight and commended the federal government over development, when they spoke with with The Reporters.
” I think the federal government did the right thing by lifting the suspension it placed on Twitter operations in the country.
In the same vein, the social media platform must have learnt one or two lessons from the developmnt,Mr Jones Alabi, a computer expert, told our correspondent in Lokoja.
