A 50-year-old herbalist, Kolawole Sikiru,who allegedly broke into a cemetery with the intention to cut body parts on Wednesday appeared in a Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court.
He is facing three-count charge bordering on forcible entry, misconduct with regards to corpse and receiving fraudulently obtained property.
The defendant, a resident of Ikorodu area of Lagos however told the court that he was not guilty of the offence preferred against him.
But the prosecutor, Insp. Modupe Olaluwoye, insisted that the defendant committed the offence at 12.30a.m. on Dec. 4, 2021, at Sabo Cemetery, Ikorodu Road, Lagos, by sneaking into the cemetery and cut out human parts from a freshly buried corpse.
Olaluwoye also told the court that Sikiru was caught in the act with a locally made wooden knife and a nylon bag containing two human hands, a piece of human flesh and a human heart parts.
She said that it was the cemetery security guard that caught the defendant when he was climbing the fence of the cemetery with the human parts in his possession.
The prosecutor further said that the alleged offences against the defendant contravened Sections 52, 165 (a) (b) (c) and 328 (1) (2) {a} {b} of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).
The Chief Magistrate, Mrs L.Y. Balogun, however, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N2 million with two sureties in like sum, adding that the sureties must be gainfully employed, residents within the court jurisdiction.
She added that the sureties must produce evidence of three years tax payment to the Lagos State Government, have their addresses verified by the court and show a national identification.
