The Chairman of the Niger State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Dr. Abu Nmodu, has called for urgent measures to protect journalists following a recent altercation involving a media practitioner and a member of the governorâs security team.
Dr. Nmodu made the call while addressing journalists after a Congress meeting of the union held at the IBB Pen House in Minna, stressing that the safety of practitioners remains non-negotiable in the discharge of their constitutional duties.
He urged relevant security agencies and the state government to caution their personnel against harassment and attacks on journalists.
The demand formed part of resolutions contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the Congress, jointly signed by the Chairman of the Communiqué Drafting Committee, Priscilla Dennis, Secretary Ismaila Musa Rabba, and Council Secretary, Comrade Usman Chiji.
The union also directed its leadership to engage appropriate authorities to ensure the protection of media professionals across the state.
Amid the concerns, the NUJ Chairman reaffirmed the unionâs commitment to fostering developmental journalism and strengthening collaboration with the state government, assuring of continued objectivity in reporting government policies and programmes.
Earlier, the Niger State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mr. Obed Nuhu Nana, had disclosed the state governmentâs readiness to organise a Media Summit and a statewide media tour for practicing journalists.
Speaking at the Congress, the Commissioner said the initiative was designed to give journalists firsthand knowledge of projects and developmental strides of the administration of Governor Mohammed Umar Bago.
He commended journalists in the state for their cooperation and engagement, noting that the planned summit and tour would further deepen understanding between the government and the media.
âThe Governor Umar Bago-led administration has plans for a Media Summit and a statewide media tour for practicing journalists to see for themselves projects so far executed,â he said.
Nana also urged journalists to adhere strictly to the ethics of their profession to avoid misinterpretation of government policies, while reaffirming the administrationâs commitment to openness and transparency.
Responding, Dr. Nmodu congratulated the Commissioner on his conferment of the traditional title, âDamasani Wyikuâ of Bwari Area Council in the Federal Capital Territory, and reiterated the unionâs readiness to work closely with the government in promoting credible and balanced reportage.
