In a world increasingly defined by connectivity, spectrum has become the new oil of the digital economy, invisible yet indispensable. With the unveiling of the National Spectrum Roadmap 2026–2030, telecommunications experts believe that the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) is on the right track to signal a bold and strategic intent to future-proof Nigeria’s telecommunications landscape and position the country as a serious player in the global digital order.
The roadmap, unveiled at a recent high-level stakeholders’ consultation forum in Abuja, is more than a regulatory document, according to participants.
Many Nigerians express delight that that the move is a clear statement of policy direction that recognises spectrum as a national development asset and not merely a technical resource for telecom operators. They stressed that at its core, the roadmap seeks to align spectrum management with Nigeria’s economic, social, and technological aspirations.
Announcing the framework, the Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, Dr. Aminu Maida,
described the policy as a response to Nigeria’s expanding digital ambitions.
From faster broadband speeds and wider network coverage to improved quality of service and deeper digital inclusion, the roadmap is designed to create a predictable and transparent environment that attracts investment and stimulates innovation across the telecoms value chain.
One of the most impactful aspects of the roadmap that emanated from the event is the planned opening of the lower 6GHz and 60GHz licence-exempt bands. This policy move is expected to unlock significant additional capacity for high-speed broadband, particularly for Wi-Fi, fixed wireless access, and emerging enterprise solutions. For operators, it lowers entry barriers. For consumers, it promises more affordable and reliable connectivity.
Represented at the forum by the Head of Spectrum Administration, Atiku Lawal, Dr. Maida underscored the often-overlooked importance of spectrum in everyday digital life. From mobile calls and online banking to telemedicine and smart city applications, spectrum silently powers Nigeria’s digital interactions and economic exchanges.
The roadmap also reflects the NCC’s growing appreciation of future data demand. With rising smartphone penetration, cloud adoption, artificial intelligence, and the Internet of Things gaining ground, Nigeria’s data consumption is set to grow exponentially.

Importantly, the framework reinforces the NCC’s commitment to inclusive growth. This aligns with national objectives on bridging the digital divide and ensuring that no part of the country is left behind in the digital revolution.
Contributing to the success of the event,the Executive Commissioner for Technical Services, NCC,.Abraham Oshadami, emphasised this point by noting that spectrum efficiency must serve broader development goals. Wireless broadband expansion, he said, should support education, healthcare, commerce, security, and governance, not just urban consumer demand.
Beyond connectivity, the roadmap has strong economic implications.
Experience shows that telecommunications remain a major contributor to Nigeria’s GDP, and efficient spectrum management directly impacts network quality, service affordability, and sector competitiveness. By providing regulatory certainty, the NCC is strengthening investors’ confidence at a time when capital is increasingly selective.
Stakeholders from the technology ecosystem have welcomed the initiative. Dr. Lola Fafore of Huawei Nigeria described the roadmap as a catalyst for innovation and broadband deepening, noting that access to harmonised and well-planned spectrum is critical for deploying next-generation technologies such as 5G, advanced Wi-Fi, and smart infrastructure.
No doubt,the consultative approach adopted by the NCC will further enhance the credibility of the roadmap, stakehokders in the telecommunications subsector express optimism.They said that by engaging operators, equipment manufacturers, policymakers, and experts over a two-day forum, the Commission has demonstrated its commitment to participatory regulation and evidence-based decision-making
What more,in global terms, the roadmap will help Nigeria to be a proper space to align with international best practices in spectrum planning.
As countries race to harness digital technologies for competitiveness, Mr.William Salami,a telecommunications expert also believes that Nigeria’s forward-looking framework will go along way to improve its standing in the global digital economy and strengthens cross-border technology cooperation.
Crucially, the document recognises that spectrum policy is no longer just about telecoms. It is about national productivity, youth employment, digital entrepreneurship, and the ability of small businesses to compete in an online marketplace. In essence, the roadmap is a development tool as much as a regulatory guide.
For the telecoms industry, the message is clear. The NCC is not only regulating the present but actively shaping the future. By anticipating technological trends and data growth, the Commission is providing operators with the clarity needed to plan networks, deploy infrastructure, and innovate responsibly.
