Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar.

The Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has resigned from office with immediate effect, citing health reason and formally conveyed his decision to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on December 1, 2025.

The President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, confirmed the development in a brief statement issued Monday night in Abuja, adding that President Tinubu has accepted the minister’s resignation and expressed gratitude for his service to the nation.

Onanuga added that the President is expected to notify the Senate of Badaru’s replacement later in the week.

Abubakar, 63, served as the two-term governor of Jigawa State from 2015 to 2023 before his appointment into the Federal Executive Council on August 21, 2023.

His sudden exit comes at a critical moment, coinciding with President Tinubu’s recent declaration of a national security emergency, with further details of the measures to be announced soon.
