A woman mistaken for a kidnapper was lynched by an irate mob on Thursday morning at the popular Ipata Market in Ilorin East Local Government Area of Kwara State.
The victim, later identified as a destitute, was reportedly wandering around the community when residents suspected her of being involved in kidnapping.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), for the Police Command in the state, Toun Ejire-Adeyemi, described the act as unfortunate.
“Information received indicated that a woman, suspected to be destitute, was sighted wandering around the community.
Misguided members of the public wrongly suspected her to be a kidnapper. In the ensuing circumstances, an irate mob descended on the woman, inflicting serious bodily harm,” the statement read.
Police patrol teams were said to have swiftly mobilized to the scene, rescued the victim, and rushed her to the General Hospital, Ilorin. However, the attending doctor later confirmed her dead as a result of the injuries sustained.
Her remains have since been deposited at the hospital mortuary, while police have commenced a discreet investigation into the incident.
The statement further stressed that the command strongly condemns jungle justice, warning that such acts undermine the rule of law and endanger innocent lives.
