Four officers of the Kwara State Police Command have been detained for allegedly extorting a student of the Federal Polytechnic, Offa.
The officers, reportedly attached to the Anti-Cultism Unit, were accused of unlawfully detaining the student, Taiwo Kayode Taye, and extorting the sum of N200,000 from him.
The alleged incident occurred at Erin-Ile while Taiwo was en route to Osogbo, Osun State.
According to reports, the student was arrested for refusing to unlock his mobile phone.
He was later transferred to the Ijagbo Police Division and subsequently to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Ilorin, the state capital.
Confirming the development on Thursday, the Police Commissioner in Kwara State,CP. Adekimi Ojo, said the four officers are currently in custody at the ‘A’ Division in Ilorin.
“The officers involved have been arrested and are being held in custody. A full investigation is underway, and I assure you they will face the consequences of their actions,” Ojo stated.
It was further alleged that after Taiwo was forced to unlock his phone, N200,000 was transferred from his account to another account bearing the name Lucy Akor.
Following a public outcry on social media and among concerned citizens, the police command launched an internal probe to uncover the facts of the case.
Commissioner Ojo strongly condemned the incident, describing it as unacceptable and damaging to the image of the Nigeria Police Force.
“This kind of behaviour tarnishes the integrity of the force. We are committed to ensuring justice is served and rebuilding public confidence in the police,” he said.
