In a remarkable gesture aimed at fostering religious harmony and strengthening interfaith relations in Nigeria, the Islamic Education Trust (IET) has donated a borehole to the Niger State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN).
Speaking at the official handover of the water facility, the Director-General of the IET, Alhaji Arzika Abubakar Rimau, said the initiative was part of the organization’s broader commitment to unity, peace, and mutual respect among adherents of different faiths.
“We love Nigeria and Nigerians, irrespective of religious or tribal inclinations
“This donation to CAN is our humble contribution toward strengthening interfaith harmony and building bridges of understanding in Niger State,”Rimau stated.
He emphasized that the gesture aligns with the legacy of the IET’s founder, the late Sheikh Ahmed Lemu, who was a staunch advocate of peaceful coexistence and interfaith collaboration.
Rimau fondly recalled Sheikh Lemu’s enduring friendship with Christian leaders such as the late Father O’Connell, noting their shared commitment to educational and social development in the state.
Receiving the facility on behalf of CAN, the state chairman, Most Rev. Dr. Bulus Dauwa Yohanna, expressed profound appreciation for the donation, describing it as a “symbol of unity and a practical demonstration of love and peaceful coexistence.”
“This borehole is not just about water. “It is a message of friendship, partnership, and hope for greater inter-religious collaboration in our state and country,”he said.
Earlier, the Director of Liaison Services at IET, Alhaji Ibrahim Yahaya, commended members of staff for identifying the need at the CAN Secretariat and bringing it to the organization’s attention.
Also speaking at the event, former CAN Chairman, Rev. Mathias Echioda, and the Special Adviser to the Governor on Inter-Tribal Affairs, Chief George Dike, praised the IET’s inclusive approach and described the gesture as further evidence that Niger State remains a beacon of religious harmony and peaceful coexistence in Nigeria.
Religious experts believe that in a time when tensions and misunderstandings can easily fuel division, the donation by IET serves as a powerful reminder of the role faith-based organizations can play in building bridges of unity.
They note that as Nigeria continues to navigate its diversity, such acts of kindness and solidarity are vital to creating a more peaceful and inclusive society.
