The Idoma Area Traditional Council, in collaboration with the nine Local Government Chairmen in Idoma land, has urged the Benue State Government to compel Fulani herders to vacate farmlands to avert escalating tensions and allow farmers to resume agricultural activities without fear.
This call was made in a communique issued after an emergency meeting held at the Och’Idoma’s Palace in Otukpo.
The document, signed by Adegbe Uloko Sundaeh, Secretary of the Council, cited increasing concerns over farmers’ safety and recent violent attacks allegedly carried out by armed herdsmen.
“It is unanimously agreed that the state government should engage Fulani herdsmen and ensure they vacate all farmlands to enable farmers return to their fields. Armed herdsmen must be persuaded and directed to leave the area to prevent further violence,” the communique read.
The Council condemned the recent attacks in Idoma communities, which resulted in loss of lives, and extended condolences to bereaved families. It commended security agencies for their continued efforts and sacrifices in maintaining peace.
While acknowledging the state government’s efforts to boost security, the Council called for stronger political will, strategic planning, and increased resources to protect rural communities.
It encouraged residents to remain vigilant and to cooperate with security agencies by promptly reporting suspicious activities. The Council also urged sustained dialogue among stakeholders—including farmers, herders, community leaders, and security officials—to promote peaceful coexistence.
Additionally, it recommended a review of land-use policies to ensure equitable access for both farmers and herders and emphasized strict enforcement of the Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Law of 2017.
“No one is above the law. The federal and state governments must show the political will to implement these resolutions and strengthen the security architecture in Idoma land and Benue State at large,” the council said.
