Hon. Teejay Yusuf, the 2023 senatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kogi West, has called on the state government and security agencies to take decisive action against the escalating wave of insecurity in Okun Land, particularly in Bunu communities.
In a statement issued on Monday, the former three-term House of Representatives member expressed deep concern over the increasing cases of attacks, kidnappings, and intimidation that have left many residents in fear.
He extended his sympathies to the families and associates of those affected by the violence.
Yusuf, who previously represented Kabba-Bunu/Ijumu Federal Constituency in the National Assembly, urged residents to remain calm while calling for urgent intervention to restore law and order.
“The persistent attacks on the peace-loving Bunu people have worsened hunger, poverty, and hardship across the affected communities,” he lamented.
He described the perpetrators as “criminal elements with unknown identities” who have subjected residents to “harassment, intimidation, and abductions,” often demanding hefty ransoms that many peasant farmers cannot afford.
The former lawmaker called on the Kogi State Government to check the influx of individuals with questionable backgrounds into State between 2020 and 2022.
“The frequency of these nefarious attacks has left residents in psychological distress, forcing many farmers to abandon their lands for fear of being kidnapped,” he added.
Yusuf also called on the state government to implement effective security measures and urged security agencies to intensify efforts in safeguarding lives and property in Okun Land.
