Residents of Edo State have commended Governor Monday Okpebholo for his prompt and decisive actions following the tragic killings of travelers in Uromi, Esan North East Local Government Area, on Thursday, March 27, 2025.

The incident, which claimed some lives, was linked to an unregistered vigilante group, sparking widespread concern. In response, the state government swiftly suspended all illegal vigilante operations and relieved the Commander of the Edo State Security Corps, CP Friday Ibadin (rtd), of his duties.

Dr. Florence Omoruyi, a lecturer at the University of Benin, praised the Governor’s actions, describing them as “a clear reflection of leadership that listens and acts.”

She emphasized that regulating community security structures is essential to preventing lawlessness.

Similarly, in Auchi, businessman and community leader, Mr. Shuaibu Idris, applauded the Governor’s intervention, noting that it demonstrates responsible governance.

He said, “Governor Okpebholo is setting a leadership example by ensuring that justice is pursued without delay.”

In Uromi, where the tragedy occurred, residents expressed a mixture of grief and hope with many acknowledging the government’s efforts in reaching out to the families of victims and taking proactive security measures.

Mrs. Patience Itoto, a trader at the Uromi main market, said, “We are heartbroken, but we appreciate the Governor’s swift response. It shows that the state is serious about preventing a recurrence of such incidents.”

The Edo State Government has confirmed that 14 suspects have been arrested, with security agencies intensifying efforts to apprehend others involved.

A special police team deployed by the Inspector General of Police is leading the investigation.

In a statement earlier this week, the state government reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the constitutional rights of all Nigerians, including freedom of movement and the right to conduct lawful business in any part of the country.

It also confirmed ongoing engagement with community leaders and families of victims.

Civil society advocate, Mr. Agharese Obazee, described the administration’s response as “mature and people-oriented.” He praised the Governor’s call for calm and his commitment to justice, emphasizing the need for security measures that protect all residents.

As Edo State mourns the victims, observers believe the Governor’s actions so far demonstrate a commitment to safeguarding lives and ensuring that security agencies operate within the law.

Many hope that the tragedy will lead to stronger oversight of community security groups across the state.
