The Association of Table Water Producers of Nigeria (ATWAP) has urged the federal and state governments to prioritize access to affordable, safe, and clean drinking water for all Nigerians.
ATWAP National President, Dr. Clementina Ativie, made this appeal on Saturday during the 2025 World Water Day celebration for the Southwest/Kwara Zone, held in Ota, Ogun State.
Represented by the Lagos Chapter Chairperson, Mosaku Omolabake, Ativie stressed the pressing challenges Nigerians face in accessing clean and sustainable drinking water.
“I commend our members for their tireless efforts in providing affordable and accessible drinking water.
However, our work must be supported by broader commitments to preserve our water resources, including glaciers,” she said.
She stressed the importance of sustainable water management, advocating policies and programs that protect and preserve both glaciers and other essential water sources.
Ativie further emphasized that glaciers play a crucial role in global water systems, biodiversity support, and water supply for human consumption, agriculture, and industries.
She called for increased awareness, efficient water resource management, and the protection of water sources to ensure long-term sustainability.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Babatunde Lawal, ATWAP Chairman, Ogun Chapter, noted that the success of any trade association depends not only on leadership but also on the quality of its followership.
“Effective followership involves active participation, constructive criticism, ethical responsibility, and a shared vision. A strong trade association needs members who are not just beneficiaries but active contributors to its growth,” he said.
Lawal stressed the need for leadership-followership synergy, investment in leadership development, transparency, and adaptability to sustain the association’s relevance in the future.
Also speaking, Mr. Benu Philips, State Coordinator of the Ogun 2 Office in Ota, urged ATWAP members to adhere strictly to the regulatory guidelines of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).
Represented by Mrs. Grace Adeoye, a NAFDAC official, Philips reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to regulating and monitoring packaged water, drugs, medical devices, and cosmetics to ensure public health and safety.
He also urged ATWAP members to report any cases of quackery to the nearest NAFDAC office for appropriate action.
Our correspondent reports that World Water Day is celebrated annually on March 22 to raise awareness about global water challenges and the need for sustainable water management.
