In Nigeria’s political landscape, the Central District of Kogi State has emerged as a dynamic hub, largely due to the efforts and influence of the Ebira people. From early days in Kwara State, where they produced the state’s first civilian governor, Alhaji Adamu Atta, the Ebira people have consistently played a significant role in the region’s political journey.
Today, the Central District holds a unique position in Kogi State’s political equation, with two Ebira sons, Alhaji Yahaya Bello and the recently elected Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, rising to the governorship. As the district looks to the future, enhancing its political relevance could be a strategic approach to long-term progress and stability within the state.
This article provides a comprehensive view of the political journey of the Ebira people, examines the historical milestones they have achieved, and discusses how the Central District can build on its current momentum in Kogi’s political landscape. While focusing on the Ebira community, this article aims to maintain a balanced perspective, recognizing the contributions of all ethnic groups that make Kogi a richly diverse state.
The Ebira people, indigenous to the present-day Kogi State, were once part of Kwara State. In this region, they began their political journey and established their roots as an influential community. The ascent of Alhaji Adamu Atta to Kwara State’s governorship in 1979 marked a significant milestone in the political journey of members of this unique tribe in Nigeria.
Atta’s election as the first civilian governor in Kwara State remains a historic achievement, symbolizing the resilience and ambition of the Ebira people. His leadership laid the groundwork for a political legacy that would eventually extend to Kogi State.
Alhaji Adamu Atta’s tenure showcased the organizational strengths and cultural pride of the Ebira people, as he sought to promote unity and development among diverse ethnic groups within Kwara state .This approach contributed to an evolving political awareness within the Ebira community, helping them to refine their strategies for political engagement in the years to come.
The creation of Kogi State on August 27,1991 provided the Ebira people with a new arena for political engagement. With Kogi’s formation, the Ebira people became part of a broader multicultural community that included other ethnic groups such as the Igala and Okun Bassa among others. This transition was both an opportunity and a challenge, as the Ebira had to navigate the complexities of a diverse political landscape.
As Kogi State matured, the Central District gained recognition for its strategic importance in political and economic and social affairs. The region’s rich cultural heritage, economic resources, and proactive leadership all contributed to the district’s influence within Kogi. However, it wasn’t until recent years that the Ebira people solidified their standing by achieving the governorship within the state.
In 2016, Alhaji Yahaya Bello became the first Ebira governor of Kogi State, marking a new era for the Central District. Bello’s election, which came after the unexpected passing of gubernatorial candidate, Abubakar Audu, was a pivotal event that gave the Central District a new level of political visibility. Yahaya Bello’s tenure brought renewed focus to the district, as his administration implemented policies aimed at security, infrastructure, and youth empowerment across Kogi State.
One of Bello’s significant achievements was in the area of security. Recognizing Kogi’s vulnerability to regional conflicts and criminal activities, he prioritized security infrastructure and enforcement, leading to a more stable environment for citizens and businesses. This focus on safety not only benefited the state but also demonstrated the leadership potential of the Central District on a wider scale.
Bello also emphasized economic development and infrastructure, launching projects aimed at improving healthcare, and education.
Bello’s leadership undeniably enhanced the Central District’s profile in Kogi’s political arena, establishing a foundation for future leaders from the area.
Following in the footsteps of Yahaya Bello, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo emerged as a significant figure in Kogi’s political landscape. Elected in 2023 and sworn in January 2024,Ododo’s victory marked the second time an Ebira leader ascended to the governorship in Kogi. His election reflects the growing acceptance and respect for the Central District’s contributions to state governance.
Ododo’s background in public administration and finance positions him as a leader who understands the challenges of managing a complex state like Kogi. His administration aims to build on the progress made by his predecessor, with plans to focus on economic diversification, social welfare programmes, and enhanced community engagement.
Many political analysts that given the commendable manner Ododo is piloting the affairs of the state his tenure could further cement the Central District’s relevance within Kogi and highlight the leadership capabilities of the Ebira community.
The Central District’s political journey offers valuable insights into the power of strategic engagement and cultural unity. However, as Kogi State continues to grow and diversify, maintaining and enhancing the Central District’s relevance will require thoughtful approaches that address the needs and aspirations of all residents.
The Central District can strengthen its position by championing inclusive policies that benefit all ethnic groups within Kogi. This could involve initiatives that foster economic empowerment, healthcare, and education, with a focus on reaching marginalized communities. By promoting policies that uplift all Kogi residents, the Central District can enhance its reputation as a leader committed to statewide unity and prosperity.
In a multicultural state like Kogi, alliances across ethnic groups are vital for lasting political relevance. The Ebira leaders of the Central District have an opportunity to build coalitions with leaders from other districts, such as the Igala in the East and the Okun in the West. These alliances could support policies that benefit the entire state, ensuring that the Central District’s influence extends beyond its immediate constituency.
With Nigeria’s population predominantly young, engaging youths in the political process is essential for long-term sustainability.
