Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Ododo, has officially signed a bill converting the state-of-the-art Reference Hospital in Okene into the Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH) Teaching Hospital.
The Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mr. Kingsley Fanwo,made the disclosure during a press briefing on Tuesday in Lokoja
This development comes in line with the approval by the National Universities Commission for a full-time Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme, along with other medical courses, at CUSTECH.
According to Mr. Fanwo, this decision provides a strong foundation for the programme’s successful launch.
“This accomplishment is the outcome of months of collaboration between the university, the State Ministry of Health, and the State Ministry of Education. We also commend the State House of Assembly for passing the bill, which has now been signed into law by Governor Ododo,” Fanwo stated.
He emphasized the administration’s commitment to improving healthcare, noting that the former Reference Hospital—now the CUSTECH Teaching Hospital—is equipped with world-class medical facilities, some of which are being introduced for the first time in Africa.
“With this development, CUSTECH will have state-of-the-art medical technology to train exceptional healthcare professionals for Kogi State and beyond,” he added.
Fanwo also reiterated the administration’s dedication to both healthcare and education, calling the signing a major milestone in the state’s development.
He expressed gratitude to the members of the State House of Assembly for their collaborative efforts in making this achievement a reality.
With the bill now a law, CUSTECH is set to launch its MBBS programme.
