The Executive Director of Still Waters Foundation, Dr. Femi Lanre-Oke, has urged the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to take decisive action against the growing menace of one-way driving in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Abuja, Lanre-Oke expressed grave concern over the increasing cases of driving against traffic, particularly on major roads like the airport road.
“People driving against traffic has become an alarming issue in the FCT. The recklessness is unprecedented—morning, afternoon, evening, and even at night. Some drivers even reverse on expressways,” Lanre-Oke said.
Lanre-Oke, who also serves as the Senior Pastor of Jesus Praise Evangelical Ministries International (JPEMI), attributed the issue to inadequate enforcement and insufficient public awareness.
He also called on the FRSC to deploy additional personnel to high-risk areas, especially during the busy yuletide season, when traffic volume is typically higher.
“The FRSC must act urgently. They should assign more officers to critical areas and enhance public enlightenment on the dangers of one-way driving. Campaigns through radio, TV, and social media are essential to educate the public,” he said.
Lanre-Oke also advocated for stricter enforcement of traffic laws, emphasizing that offenders should face penalties, including fines, license suspensions, and even imprisonment, to deter others.
“The FRSC should collaborate with other law enforcement agencies like the police and military to ensure effective enforcement. Sanctions for offenders must be consistent and severe enough to discourage this dangerous practice,” he added.
As a visiting professor at the American University of Peace and Governance (AUPG), USA, Lanre-Oke noted that tackling one-way driving requires a collaborative effort from the government, law enforcement agencies, and the public.
He urged the public to support the FRSC by reporting incidents of one-way driving and educating others on its dangers and appealed to the government to provide adequate resources for effective enforcement.
“With a united effort, we can curb one-way driving and significantly improve road safety in the FCT. Public cooperation and governmental support are vital in achieving this goal,” Lanre-Oke urge.
