The Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS) has urged motorists to exercise caution during the harmattan season due to hazardous driving conditions caused by foggy and hazy weather.
Dr. Yusuf Suberu, FCT Squadron Leader at the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO), issued the warning on Monday in Abuja, highlighting the increased risk of road accidents during this period.
“The dry season is characterized by reduced visibility, making road safety awareness critical,” Suberu stated. He advised drivers to avoid speeding, particularly in the “ember months,” when traffic surges and impatience can lead to dangerous driving behaviors.
He also emphasized the importance of regular vehicle maintenance, urging motorists to be vigilant for road diversions and construction obstructions.
“Overloading and speeding are especially hazardous during this season,” Suberu noted. “These behaviors compromise vehicle performance and the driver’s ability to respond to critical situations,”he said.
Suberu reminded road users to prioritize safety by adhering to traffic rules, maintaining speed limits, and ensuring their vehicles are in good condition.
He explained that “A crash-free society is achievable if we all drive responsibly and look out for one another.”
