Relationships formed in secondary school often create lasting bonds. These connections, nurtured in structured educational environments, have proven to be vital platforms for mutual support, personal growth, and national development. Among old students, such relationships typically evolve into associations that stand the test of time. However, the connection between alumni and their former principals is often fleeting.
This is not the case with the alumni of Government Secondary School (GSS) Afon, Kwara State, Nigeria, and their pioneer principal, Chief Dr. Solomon Aboyeji. Their enduring bond, which began in 1976, continues uptil today,serving as an inspiring example of how shared history and values can foster unity and development.
The year 1976 marked a turning point for education in Kwara State, a region carved out of Nigeria’s three geopolitical zones in 1967. Responding to the growing demand for secondary education, the then Military Governor, General George Agbazika Innih, established several schools, including GSS Afon.
Situated about 30 kilometers from Ilorin, the state capital, GSS Afon opened its doors on September 3, 1976. It was the first secondary school in Afon, headquarters of Asa Local Government Area, with Chief Solomon Aboyeji at the helm as the pioneer principal.
Chief Aboyeji, vibrant in all spheres of human engagement,is a man of discipline, character, with multifaceted talent. Renowned for his strict yet compassionate leadership, he left an indelible mark on the students under his tutelage. His no-nonsense approach to discipline earned him the respect—and sometimes fear—of his students, particularly those inclined to mischief.
Many alumni describe him as a father figure who balanced firmness with genuine care. His emphasis on moral character, academic excellence, and overall discipline shaped the lives of countless students, equipping them with values that continue to guide their paths.
Even decades after retiring, Chief Aboyeji’s love for his former students remains unwavering. Leveraging technology, he frequently reaches out to them with words of wisdom and encouragement. His 2024 New Year message, a heartfelt blend of gratitude, advice, and blessings, encapsulates his unique role as both mentor and moral compass:
*”Congratulations! No doubt, we encountered many bumps this year. Yet, here we are—counted among the living. This is marvelous, precious, and glorious. God’s plan is perfect.
“Live your life to the fullest by understanding others’ moods and dispositions. Be more godly, humane, and helpful in 2024. Forgive those who have hurt you—it brings healing and peace. And always remember your roots—your family, hometown, and community. God will decorate you in the presence of your enemies and ensure blessings find you in the new year,” Chief Aboyeji would also advise the alumni.
The bond between the alumni of GSS Afon and Chief Aboyeji offers a blueprint for fostering unity in a fragmented society. At a time when Nigeria seems divided along ethnic, religious, and political lines, such relationships highlight the importance of shared values and mutual respect.
By emulating the principles of compassion, discipline, and inclusivity exemplified by Chief Aboyeji, Nigerians can bridge divides and build a stronger, more united nation. As many have observed, these enduring relationships serve as a balm for societal wounds, enabling citizens to rise above differences and work collectively for national progress.
