Nigeria is set to join the ranks of countries already utilizing part of the 6GHz band for Wi-Fi 6 applications, enhancing the nation’s connectivity landscape.
In a landmark event, Dr. Aminu Maida, Executive Vice Chairman/CEO of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), disclosed this exciting news in his speech at an event hosted by the Commission in Lagos.
He expressed enthusiasm for the government’s commitment under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu regarding this initiative.
Dr. Maida recalled that since 2023, the Commission has focused on strategic areas to harness opportunities for stakeholders, acknowledging the unique perspectives of licensees, industry operators, consumers, and the government.
Central to this initiative,he added,are collaboration, data-driven decisions, compliance, and digitalization, aimed at transforming telecommunications in Nigeria.
Emphasizing the importance of participatory regulation, Dr. Maida called for input from industry stakeholders on the implementation of the 6GHz band.
He noted that with an ever-increasing demand for high-speed internet, the 6GHz band promises to alleviate congestion currently faced by the 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies.
According to him,this decision follows the 2023 World Radiocommunications Conference, which allocated the 6GHz band for Wi-Fi and International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT), ensuring that Nigeria remains aligned with global best practices.
Dr. Maida also told the gathering that as deliberations commence, the Commission aims to gather valuable insights for informed decision-making, paving the way for enhanced telecommunications services and robust internet infrastructure across the nation.
