The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Niger State chapter, has condemned the early Saturday morning arson attack on the zonal headquarters of the Redeemed Church of God located along the Federal College of Education (FCE) road in Kontagora, Niger State. The church was set ablaze by suspected religious extremists.
The State Chairman, CAN, Most Rev. Dr. Bulus Dauwa Yohanna, expressed deep sadness over the incident, calling it a direct attack on Christian communities. He urged the state government and security agencies to intervene and ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice.
Bishop Yohanna described the attack as barbaric and unjustifiable, noting that the pain it has caused the Christian community.
He appealed to the government to take decisive action and enforce the rule of law against the culprits. Yohanna expressed disbelief that such acts of violence could occur in modern Nigeria, emphasizing the importance of protecting the country’s principle of freedom of worship.
Pastor Samson Ogbebor, the Assistant Pastor of the church, reported that the fire started around 3 a.m. on Saturday.
He described arriving to find the church, which has been serving the community for 20 years, in ruins, with properties looted by attackers. Ogbebor recounted previous challenges, including a similar attack a decade ago, and ongoing hostility that had prevented proper repairs.
The Church Elder, Mr. John Aboje, stated that the congregation remains resolute in their commitment to worship despite the attack.
He called on the state government and the Kontagora emirate to address the issue and uphold the freedom of worship.
The church’s leadership has appealed to Governor Umaru Bago, Emir of Kontagora Alhaji Muhammadu Barau Mu’azu II, and security agencies to treat the incident with the seriousness it deserves.
The attack has been reported to the Division ‘A’ Police station in Kontagora for investigation. Reports indicate that the church has been targeted by similar attacks in the past, with threats against its existence in the area.
