Oyiza Aishat Hamza, a survivor of multiple severe accidents, is urgently seeking assistance from government officials and philanthropists to cover her medical expenses, daily needs, and educational goals.
Previously a student at the College of Nursing Obangede, Oyiza aspired to become a renowned Certified Nurse-Midwife (CNM). However, her ambitions were derailed by a tragic accident on March 7, 2017, as she was returning from school to Lokoja.
In that incident, Oyiza was the sole survivor of a fatal auto crash on the Lokoja-Okene road, with all other passengers losing their lives. Since then, she has endured several more accidents, each worsening her condition. Her most recent accident in December 2022 resulted in the amputation of one of her legs when a truck ran over a motorcycle she was on.
Despite these hardships, Oyiza remains grateful for her survival and clings to her faith, inspired by Ecclesiastes 9:4: “But for him who is joined to all the living there is hope, for a living dog is better than a dead lion.” She is determined to pursue her dream of becoming a professional nurse if she can secure the necessary financial support.
In an emotional interview, Oyiza detailed her plight: “I have survived three major accidents, each more devastating than the last. Despite the physical and emotional toll, I thank God for keeping me alive. My first accident in 2017 left me severely injured, and subsequent accidents only compounded my suffering.”
She recounted that following her leg amputation in January 2023, her father passed away on the day of her surgery, compounding her grief. Her family has done their best to support her, but their financial resources are insufficient. In addition, a recent robbery on May 18, 2024, where a thief stole her phone and funds raised for her housing, has left her in a dire situation.
“I’m now struggling to manage my medical treatments and daily needs,” Oyiza explained. “For the past two months, I’ve been living in a school classroom in Lokoja and have no means to buy food or medicine. I urgently need financial aid for medical expenses, housing, and to resume my education.”
Oyiza appeals for support from the government and compassionate individuals who can help her rebuild her life and fulfill her nursing aspirations.
