Niger state government has invited labour leaders in the state for dialogue in fresh move to arrest industrial unrest which commenced on Wednesday 21st, February 21, 2024. Our Correspondent reports that the move is a saving measure to end indefinite strike by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), This is coming as members of the organized Labour in the state have denied reaching a truce with the state government and resolved the dispute over their welfare package. The Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Alhaji Abubakar Usman, in Minna, said that the Governor Mohammed Umar Bago-led administration had enjoyed cordial working relationship with the organized labour and would want that to continue. “As a government, ‘we are taking steps to ensure that some of the contentious issues are amicably addressed in the best interest of both parties. “In furtherance of this understanding, Niger state government on Tuesday, 20th February, 2024, invited organized labour to a meeting by 2 p.m and hopes to receive its cooperation in this regard,”he said. However, the organized labour has denied holding a meeting with government representatives on Tuesday as part of efforts to resolve the impasse. The outcome of the meeting with the Speaker of Niger State House of Assembly who waded is not known as at the time of this report on Wednesday. Some sources told our correspondent that the Speaker’s intervention might not have yielded the much desired result as the organized labour proceeded with the industrial strike. Our Correspondent who went round town, to assess the level of compliance, reports that some public places like Courts, state secretariat and other places were under lock and key. Also, some health workers who reported early to duty were seen rendering skeletal services in some health facilities within Minna, the state capital and its environs, while majority of civil servants stayed away from their duty posts.
