A Security Expert,Opaluwa Eleojo, has stressed the need for extension of street lights to the Abuja-Keffi road to Nyanya and beyond for improved security of life and property on the facility.
Opaluwa, who specializes in criminology, made the call in a statement he signed in Abuja on Wednesday and sent a copy to The Reporters, expressed optimism that the extension of such facility would reduce crime on the road among other advantages.
Opaluwa, who is also a labour leader, however commended the Federal government for expanding the Ever – busy Mararaba – Nyanya – AYA Road, for at least up to the checkpoint (Boundary of Abuja and Nasarawa state).
He described the development has having the potential of reducing the endemic gridlock on that corridor, to a large extend.
The security expert also praised the federal government for approving the expansion of the road to Keffi from checkpoint, and for a proposed plan to construct a flyover bridge to ease traffic congestion in Mararaba.
He said:”This, to a great extent, will reduce the average travel time of travellers and motorists, and further extent the life of motor vehicle engine.
“AYA – NYANYA Road is one of the major routes in FCT but unfortunately it is not treated like the other major routes (Northern and the Southern Outer Way) of the territory.
“For instance, the two routes mentioned have fuctional street lightening system that illuminates it in the night but that is not the case with the AYA – NYANYA Road.
“The route has its street lights stopped, just few metres away from the Moghadishu (Abacha) Barracks.
“Apart from neglecting the citizens along this corridor, they have also been relegated to the background as second class citizens, despite contributing very hugely to the economy of the country.
” Crime statistics has shown that there’s a consistent armed robbery attacks and other violent crimes along the route in the night, especially between the Barracks and Karu Junction.
“The citizens living along this route are very patriotic, especially in the payment of their taxes and other Revenue to the government, and should be treated as the citizens living along the other route of FCT mentioned earlier.
“To effectively fight crime along that corridor, the road should be properly illuminated by providing street lights to Nyanya and beyond.A stitch in time saves nine.”
