An Ilorin-based ‘native doctor’ in Kwara State, north central Nigeria, Kolawole Idowu, has appeared in a magistrate’s court, Ilorin, for allegedly killing a pregnant woman,Bilikis Ayinde.
The Police Command in the state arraigned the accused ,alongside with one Ibrahim Taiwo, described as the deceased’s husband.
The Police report indicates that it was one Yusuf Ajarat that invited the ‘native doctor’ to ascertain the deceased’s delivery date.
It added that in the course of doing that,the “native doctor” injected her with oxytocin/ ergometrine, the injection said to have eventually caused her death.
Oxytocin/ergometrine is an obstetric combination drug. The components are synthetically produced oxytocin, a human hormone produced in the hypothalamus, and ergometrine, an alpha-adrenergic, dopaminergic and serotonin receptor agonist.
Both substances cause the uterus to contract,according to Wikipedia.
The Magistrate, Adenike Abioye, therefore,ordered that the accused and the deceased’s husband be remanded but released Yusuf Ajarat on bail for being a nursing mother and adjourned the case to July 27, 2023 for hearing.
