Parents decry alleged plan by Federal University, Lokoja to hike fees.

Some parents of students of Federal University, Lokoja, FUL, Kogi state, have kicked against alleged plan by the Federal University, Lokoja, FUL, to hike school fees and other charges.

The leader of the concerned parents, Mr Moses Abraham, who gave the hint while addressing Journalists in Lokoja on Tuesday on the issue,called on the Senate of the university to rescind the decision in interest of peace and economic quagmire confronting Nigerians, especially parents

He expressed concern that if allowed to materialise, the increment in school fees and others charges would add to the financial burden of parents and deny the children of the poor access to university education, inview of the current harsh economic reality of in the country.

To buttress his point, Abraham disclosed that information at his disposal indicates that school fee for remedial students, which used to be N50,000 had been increased to N100,000 while school fees for the new intakes skyrocketed from N56,000 to N188,500, adding that returning students would be made to pay N113,000 instead of N47,000.

He further told the Journalists that student accommodation, per bed space, presently at N20,000 had also attracted additional N40,000, adding the price of GST handbook had increased from N1,500 to N6,500 per copy.

Commenting on the issue in a telephone interview with Journalists,the Public Relations Officer of the University, Mr Daniel Iyke, denied that the university released official statement indicating any increase in its school fees and other charges.

He called on parents,students and the public to give the institution the benefit of the doubt and exercise patient before the official release of any document on the issue.

Our Correspondent recalls that FUL is among the 12 universities eastsblished by the administration of Dr.Goodluck Jonathan administration, February 2011, due to what educational analysts described as indispensable need to create more universities in the country.
