The current massive flood ravaging nine out of 21 local government areas of kogi state and sunbmerged one of them Ibaji entirely, has claimed the life of three-year-old baby and three others in the local government area.
The chairman of the local government area, Hon. Williams Iko-ojo,made this known the of the deaths while speaking with journalists on Tuesday in Onyedega, the headquarters of Ibaji local government area.
Iko-Ojo said: ” As I’m speaking with you, there is no single habitable land in Ibaji, everywhere has been submerged and people are in devastating condition.
“To be honest, the humanitarian crisis is beyond what the local government can tackle, we are calling on the National Emergency Management Agency, (NEMA), the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and all relevant authorities to come to the aid of my people”
Also Speaking, the traditional ruler, Ejeh of Ibaji and Chairman of Ibaji Traditional Council, Ajofe John Odiche Egwemi,called on the Federal government to complete the dredging of the river Niger and also embark on building dams as a long term solution to the flooding.
“I feel very devastated with the magnitude and the destructions that come from the flood disaster. Usually, we do experience flooding of farmlands between August and October but not of this magnitude” he added.
Our Correspondent gathered that, Ibaji Local Government Area is an agrarian settlement with reputation for great agricultural produce, but this has been submerged by the flood.
Meanwhile, the flood has entered some of the houses of the bstate legistors living in Ganaja vicinity, one of the areas affected by flood and forced them to relocate else where.
