Pest, Control Association of Nigeria (PECAN), has called on the three tiers of governnent in Nigeria to support it by play a leading role in pest control and management to safe lives in the country.
The National President of PECAN,Mr Olakunle Williams made the call on Monday in Lagos during the press briefing as part of the activities earmarked to mark the World Pest Day.
The event has the Theme :”Essence of Pest Management in Public Health” .
Our Correspondent recalls that the Day and its awareness were initiated by the Chinese Pest Control Association and Co-sponsored by the Federation of Asian and Oceanic Pest Management Association (FAOPMA).
The National Pest Management Association (NPMA), and the Confederation of European Pest Management Association (CEPA) are also stakeholders in the coordination of the activities of the Day.
He said that if Government could support the regulation of pest control and its management, the effort would go along way to safe lives and ensure healthy environment.
“We say today, Protect Nigeria Public health through professional pest management.
” We call attention to the big threats caused by small (tiny) pests.
“Government should promote the use of professional pest management in scientific and socially responsible way.
“Government should also protect the professional image of the pest management industry and pest control associations of Nigeria,”he said.
The national president of the association ,who warned that rat, as a pest, could be so troublesome and stubborn, advised people to use several home control methods like traps and chemical to remove them from the premises.
Williams said that PECAN members would clear the rats by using the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), approved rodenticide to clear them without odour or endangering the environment.
According to him,the Global Pest Management Association has over 30 associates driving such cause, explaining that leaders in Pest Management are looking into potential treats, caused by pest and find solutions to eradicate them.

Nigerian representative to the World Health Organisation (WHO), Dr Edwin Isotu, described Pet control as a very important activity that keyed into the pet management in the environment.
Isotu, therefore, urged pet control professionals to improve awareness on danger in patronising quacks, to enable Nigerians live in a healthy environment.
He also advised that pet should be controlled in Nigeria by regulatory standards procedures, for more efficient operations.
Isotu said that there was need for pet control experts to expose themselves to continuous learning approach to help in building synergy and promote corporations among them.
In his vote of thanks,the National Vice President of PECAN, Mr James Erond,emphasised the need for effective professional pet control management in the country and for governnent to pay more attention to pet control by enabling professionals take charge and make Nigerians enjoy healthy life.
