Armed bandits in their large numbers on Saturday evening invaded Gwada community in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger state while muslim faithful were breaking their 15th Ramadan fast, killing a police officer and three civilians.

Our Correspondent reports that the invaders, who were said to have entered Gwada village through a bush path linking the area and Kaduna village also abducted a number of persons, including women and their children.

An eyewitness account told our correspondent that the armed men started shooting sporadically into the air to scare away possible intruders as they headed to the homes of their victims and took them along with them.

The Police Public Relation Officer (PPRO), Niger state command, Wasiu A Abiodun, confirmed the attack.

Wasiu in a statement said, “The police responded immediately by mobilising combined force of police tactical team and other security agencies with vigilante to the area and repelled the hoodlums”.

The PPRO, who however, told journalists that details of the number of persons abducted were still sketchy as at the time of this report said, so far reinforcement had been dispatched to Gwada, adding that normalcy had been restored.
