Don advocates establishment of Radiotherapy, Nuclear medicine centre at UITH

As cardiovascular diseases take their effects on the people in Nigeria and the world at large, a don,Prof. Peter Adeoye has appealed to the Federal Government to establish Radiotherapy and Nuclear Medicine Centre at the University of Ilorin Teaching hospital.

Adeoye of the Department of Surgery of the University made the appeal in Ilorin during his paper presentation at the 216th Inaugural Lecture of the University of Ilorin.

The don,whose paper is entitled: “Battling to Keep our Hearts: Who Will Heal the Bleeding Hearts?”. Innovation in the Practice of Cardiothoracic Surgery”, lamented that patient operated at the UITH, have to wait for appointment in Ibadan, Abuja, Lagos, Zaria or Sokoto.

The Cardiologist, who teaches in the Faculty of Clinical Sciences, College of Health Sciences of the University, said it wad a matter of urgency to have Radiotherapy and Nuclear Medicine established at the institution.

Adeoye also called for l improved facilities and sub -specialization in Histopathology,to iimprove doctor’s promptness and accuracy in identifying disease health condition, especially of cancer, adding that there must be improved funding of cancer research to discover many grey areas in cancer treatment.

According to him, the basic tripod on which cancer treatment stands: Surgical Resection, Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy must be strengthened for enhanced treatment.
