The Southern Youth Assembly of Nigeria (SYAN) has thrown its behind the call by some sections of the country for the rotation of Presidency of Nigeria between the Southern and Northern part of the country, with a call for the next President of Nigeria to come from the Southern region.
Mr Jonathan Adekunle, the National Speaker of SYAN, who gave the position of the group on Wednesday in during a press conference in Ilorin,expressed commitment of the group toward enduring equity and fairness in 2023 general elections in the country as well as ssupporting the peaceful coexistence and unity of Nigeria,as an indivible nation.
SYAN commended the Southern Governors’ Forum, led by Arakunrin Rotimi Akeredolu, for their efforts so far in defending the region and Nigeria at all times as well as the leadership of the security operatives for their relentless efforts in restoring security and safety of lives and property.
The leadership of SYAN expressed sympathy with families of the loved ones who fell in the
line of duty.
Adekunle called on leaders across the six geo-political zones to come together and discuss how to bring about genuine unity and the kind of system of government that would strengthen the unity, progress and socio-economic developmnt of the country.
According to him, there is need for the creation of additional states in the South East geo-political zone for equity and fairness, adding that the zone remained the only one in Nigeria that with five states.
Adekunle also advocated the autonomy of the local government, referring to them as government at grassrootd, saying that all majority of decision about the local government were decided by the state Governors.
“The SYAN therefore demand for the local government autonomy to enable the citizens see and enjoy the dividends of democracy.
Adekunle called on the Federal Government to find lasting solution to unstable economy and its multiplier effect on the people as well as drop the idea in the pipe line to increase the pump price of fuel next year.
“The Association hereby pass the vote of confidence on Arakunrin Rotimi Akeredolu, the Executive Governor of Ondo state and Chairman, Southern Governors’ Forum, for his outstanding leadership quality in piloting the affairs of the Forum,” he added.
Adekunle also explained that as part of its contribution toward the overall developmnt of Nigeria,the association had commenced education and orientation of youths on federal and states laws, and organize seminars, workshops, training, skills acquisition youth investment and empowerment among others.
